I picked up the movie at a local pawn shop and sat down to watch it. Oliver Stone did an excellent job telling this story. It is told correct and true. It is an important piece of history and America was only granted 20 survivors pulled from the ruins. It is a miracle that anyone lived at all. This film is not overly graphic and it does not need to be. The acting is solid and character’s well researched.

The set is so authentic looking that you will swear it was shot at ground zero and not in California. The opening scenes were filmed in New York City which must have been a tough sell in 2005 when they started making this film. Sergeant John McLoughlin recalls his men back to station as soon as the first plane crashed into the North Tower. They have no additional information other than what is being reported by the media. These men are first responders and know that people are in trouble and need help. The police officers then commandeer a bus and head to the world trade center to assist with rescue efforts.

The film does an excellent job showing what it was like to be inside those towers and what was going on. You have to realize that while America and the entire world for that matter watched events unfold live on television that not all the people inside the towers knew what was going on. The steps of that tragic day of Sgt McLoughlin and his team take are retraced. No one knew that those buildings were going to collapse. John McLoughlin had a split second and knew the safest place was the strongest place in the building. He yells to his team to run to the service elevator shaft as the south tower is falling on his team.

Only McLaughlin, Dominick Pezzulo and Will Jimeno survived the initial collapse. Dominick was the only one who was not pinned under rubble but was killed by debris when the north tower fell. Former Marines SSgt Karnes and Sgt Thomas found the men buried in the 16 acre field of concrete and metal. It took 13 hours to get Will Jimeno out and 22 hours to rescue Sgt John McLaughlin. If not for Staff Sergeant Karnes these men may have perished. Karnes a 23 year retired Marine was working at an accounting firm and as he and his co-workers watched the towers fall he looked to everyone and said we are at war and left the office. The movie does not show all of this but this needs to be told. Karnes went and got a fresh regulation hair cut and then went home to put on a pressed out uniform that he had in his closet. He next went to a storage unit and pulled out his basic gear that consisted of an h-harness, canteens, a k-bar and some repelling rope.

Staff Sergeants next stop was to his church. He prayed and told his pasture he had a mission and was going to go to the towers and save a life. Staff Sergeant Karnes did just that!
